The conference will take place in the beautiful city of Lugano, one of the main attractions of Switzerland. Lugano is located approx. 80 km north from Milan, Italy and around 200 km south of Zürich, Switzerland. It has a mild climate, with mean temperatures between 1°C and 12°C (35°F and 55°F) in March. meteo.search.ch/lugano
Lugano is best reachable by train or by air. For Visa related information click here
Lugano Agno (LUG) is the closest airport, only 10 km away from the center of the city. It is connected by a shuttle bus (http://shuttle-bus.com/) to the train station of Lugano, to all its central hotels and even to private addresses. However, the shuttle operates only during daylight. Taxis are available directly in front of the airport. The airport itself is very small and serves only several destinations - Zurich, Geneve and Rome. In March, it could be closed for fog and weather reasons. However, this is not an issue when connecting to Lugano through Zurich or Geneve, as Swiss provides train tickets to continue to Lugano. The flight from Zurich to Lugano is low and passes the Alps and is one of the most beatiful flights you can find in Europe.
Zurich airport is approx. 200 km away from Lugano, but very conveniently connected with it by frequent trains. It takes around 3 hours to reach Lugano from Zurich airport. Zurich is serving all major worldwide destinations and rarely has weather troubling conditions. The train ticket to Lugano can be purchased shortly before the trip (no need to pre-book).
Milan is only 60 km away from Lugano, but not very well connected with it. It has three airports: Malpensa (Terminal 1, Terminal 2), Linate and Bergamo. Malpensa has a bus shuttle connection with Lugano every two hours. It takes approx. 1 hour to reach Lugano. Linate and Bergamo are not directly connected to Lugano, passengers need to take a bus shuttle to Milan Center and to take a train to Lugano. It will take approx. 3-4 hours from Bergamo or Linate to reach Lugano. Fog is often a problem for the airports too.
Lugano train station is connected with all major cities in Europe - directly with Rome, Amsterdam, Zürich, etc. It is a very convenient and the most environmentally friendly option to reach Lugano. Train tickets inside Switzerland have fixed prices, there is no difference between pre-booking and getting your tickets at the vending machines. Ticket sales in the train are subject to higher fees. Tickets and schedules are available under http://www.sbb.ch/en/home.html. If you are planning to travel a lot inside Switzerland by train, it might be worth looking at the "Half-Fare Travel card".
Rental cars are available at all above mentioned airports and in Lugano itself. However, parking places in Lugano are rare and expensive and the distances between the hotels and the conference site are short.
Public transportation in Lugano is well organized, with buses connecting all parts of the city (especially all recommended hotels and the conference center). Trains are connecting Lugano with surrounding cities, villages and attractions.
Bike rentals are available through the BikeSharing network, located in various places in Lugano: http://www.lugano-tourism.ch/en/54/bike-sharing-rete-lugano-paradiso.aspx?idActivity=1105&idMod=41
