Student Travel Grants for PerCom 2005

A number of NSF funded travel grants will be available for supporting participation of graduate students  from US universities at PerCom 2005. These travel grants are made with the support of an award by NSF to the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. The broad goal of these travel grants is to enhance research education and training of graduate students in US universities working in the area of broadband networking and its applications to pervasive and ubiquitous computing.

The deadline for applications is December 1, 2004.  We plan to support participation of about 25-30 students through these travel grant awards.

The applicants should send their request to Anand Tripathi (tripathi@cs.umn.edu) by this date. Award notifications will be communicated by December 15.

Preference will be given to those applicants who are authors of a paper in the conference or any of the affiliated workshops. Grants will be made at different levels of funding based on the following order of priority:  1) student who is the first author of a paper and presenting the paper, 2)  student authors who are not the first authors, and 3) those students who are not authors but are working in the field and would benefit from attending the conference. Special consideration would be given to applicants from under-represented groups.

All recipients of the travel grants would be expected to provide volunteer help in on-site conference organization for about 4-6 hours.

Students interested in applying for the travel grants should forward the following items by email to Anand Tripathi (tripathi@cs.umn.edu) by December 1

1.      A brief cover letter providing the following information:
a.       Student¡¯s current status in the graduate program and attach a brief CV (no more than 2-pages). Indicate the area of current research.
b.      Is the applicant one of the authors of any paper in the main conference or a workshop? If yes, please give title of the paper with the list of  all the authors as they appear on the paper. Please indicate if the paper is in the main conference or one of the  workshops (provide the workshop name),  and if the applicant will be presenting the paper.
c.       If the applicant is not an author of any paper, please describe in about 50-100 words how the applicant expects to benefit from attending PerCom 2005.
d.      Student¡¯s willingness to provide 4-6 hours voluntary help in conference organization.

2.      A letter of support from the student¡¯s advisor, endorsing the request and indicating support of additional travel funds for the student. The travel grant will be limited in amount, therefore a letter from the advisor for availability of additional funds for student travel would be required.

The awardees of the travel grants will be reimbursed after the conference for their travel expenses up to the award amount on submitting their travel reimbursement requests to Klara Nahrstedt of University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
